Rooibos: decaffeinated tea and 5 reasons to drink it

Vedle bylinných a ovocných čajů se jako vhodná alternativa k pravým čajům čím dál častěji zmiňuje rooibos. A právem. Krásně červený nálev se totiž rozhodně vyplatí zařadit do pitného režimu každého z nás.

In addition to herbal and fruit teas, rooibos is increasingly mentioned as a suitable alternative to "real" teas. And rightfully so. The beautiful red pickle is definitely worth including in the drinking regime of each of us. Although it looks like a red needle, there is much more to it.

Although rooibos [rojbos] is not, unlike green, black or white tea, a real tea, its properties, method of collection and preparation differ very little from them. It is based on long needle-like leaves from a bush called Cape tea tree. The very name of the bush suggests that this drink spread throughout the world from South Africa's, and is gaining more and more popularity. This is because it is a great and also decaffeinated drink.

Its name means red bush in Afrikaans, referring to its striking red color. The leaves of the tea tree are collected in bags and then crushed. As with regular tea, they go through oxidation, and their green color gradually changes to red. It then travels directly to the consumer. During preparation, it is simply poured with water at a temperature of 100 °C, and the pickle acquires a beautiful red color in no time.

The resulting taste is sweet and slightly nutty. Sometimes tons of caramel or vanilla are more noticeable. This is also why the combination of this red "needle" with caramel is quite common, as for example with the brand Tealia and her tea Caramel Rooibos. The drink is light and not strong. Someone likes to enjoy it with milk or cold, and in some cafes you can also order the so-called redpresso or cappuccino. It is prepared in the same way as espresso, i.e. using a lever pressure coffee machine, but instead of ground coffee, finely crushed rooibos is poured into the lever.

5 good reasons to drink rooibos

1. It's not tea...

Although drinking tea really helps the human body, too much of everything is harmful. Unlike its half-brothers, this tea does not contain caffeine. Although it is beneficial for the human body in smaller amounts, it is also very addictive. Its excessive consumption can cause pain headaches, nausea, nervousness and insomnia and people with high blood pressure should limit it completely.
Black tea in particular also contains oxalic acid. Consuming large amounts of this acid can increase the risk of kidney stones. Therefore, Rooibos is a good choice for everyone, and especially for those who have kidney problems or high blood pressure and want to avoid possible problems.
