A day dedicated to women

The roots of International Women's Day

International Women's Day has been celebrated all over the world for many years. Its unofficial origins date back to 1908, when over fifteen thousand women decided they had enough of gender inequality and organized a march through New York. They demanded shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America proclaimed the first National Women's Day.

The idea of making this day international was expressed by Clara Zetkin in 1910 at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. One hundred women from 17 countries of the world participated in it, and they unanimously agreed on its proposal.

Why March 8?

In the first years since its inception, International Women's Day did not have a specific date. when should it be celebrated It received its formal determination only in 1917, in response to the wartime strike of Russian women. They demanded, in short, "bread and peace". Four days after the women's strike, the tsar was forced to abdicate and the provisional government granted women the right to vote.

According to the Julian calendar, which was then used in Russia, the day the women's strike began was February 23. In the Gregorian calendar, it corresponded to 8. of March, and is therefore currently celebrated on this day.

It wouldn't be possible without colors

It is not entirely surprising that women also chose symbolic colors for their day. According to the International Women's Day website, its colors are purple, green and white:

  • purple means justice and dignity,
  • green symbolizes hope,
  • white represents purity, although this concept is considered controversial.
